O RHETOR, Grupo de Estudos de Retórica e Oratória Grega, iniciou suas atividades em 2009 na Universidade de Brasília e obteve credenciamento junto ao CNPq em 2011, sob a coordenação da Prof. Sandra Lúcia Rodrigues da Rocha. Em 2016, o Grupo expandiu-se para a Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), onde a Professora Priscilla Gontijo Leite passou a atuar como vice-líder,  desenvolvendo pesquisas juntamente com o Professor Marco Valério Classe Colonnelli. Em 2018, o “nome completo” do RHETOR foi alterado para Grupo de Estudos de Retórica e Oratória Antiga para contemplar a expansão do Grupo não só para a área de retórica latina, como também trabalhos de recepção em geral.

A proposta inicial do RHETOR foi motivada pelo sentido tradicional de grupo de estudos, ou seja, de reuniões periódicas, que foram inicialmente dedicadas à leitura e discussão tanto das técnicas argumentativas em uso nos textos antigos, quanto das reflexões teóricas sobre elas.

Tais reuniões acabaram por dar forma a uma equipe de pesquisa que, posteriormente, passou a congregar, por meio de Seminários abertos, pesquisadores de diversas universidades brasileiras, que desenvolvem projetos em três linhas de pesquisa:

1. Oratória e reflexões críticas sobre a literatura na Antiguidade, que visa a investigar as formas de recepção dos textos dos oradores gregos na Antiguidade, bem como a recepção de outros gêneros na oratória;
2. Retórica e historiografia antiga, que se dedica a observar as influências recíprocas entre as reflexões teóricas sobre retórica e as práticas historiográficas;
3. Tradução de textos de oratória e retórica antiga, cujo foco – o nome já diz – são as traduções, com comentários e/ou ensaios temáticos sobre textos de retórica e oratória antiga para publicação em língua portuguesa.

Ao final de 2013, o grupo atingiu um nível de aprofundamento em suas pesquisas que demandava o diálogo com especialistas de nível nacional e internacional, além da divulgação de seus trabalhos para um público mais amplo, situação que ensejou a realização do primeiro Seminário do Rhetor. Desde então o Seminário RHETOR ocorre regularmente a cada dois anos, abrindo espaço não apenas para discussão da retórica clássica, mas também para a recepção moderna e contemporânea da oratória e retórica antiga.

 

RHETOR – Ancient Rhetoric and Oratory Study Group began its activities in 2009 at the University of Brasília, under the coordination of Prof. Sandra Lúcia Rodrigues da Rocha. In 2011 the Group was recognised by CNPq (The Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), and it expanded into the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) in 2016, where Prof. Priscilla Gontijo Leite started acting as vice leader of RHETOR, carrying out a project of research with Prof. Marco Valério Classe Colonnelli.  In 2018, the full name of RHETOR was changed into Group of Studies of Ancient Rhetoric and Oratory to include works not only on Latin rhetoric, but also on modern and contemporary receptions of ancient rhetoric and oratory.

RHETOR was inspired by the traditional conception of reading groups with frequent meetings for reading and discussion of texts by professors and students – undergraduates as well as postgraduates. It has been doing such activities with studies, for example, of the argumentative techniques and the theoretical thoughts found in ancient texts.

RHETOR congregates nowadays a team of researchers from different Brazilian universities who develop research projects within three general lines of research:

1. Oratory and literary criticism in antiquity, which investigates the reception of the Attic orators in antiquity as well as the reception of other genres in oratory.
2. Ancient rhetoric and historiography, which looks at the reciprocal influences between theories of rhetoric and historiographical practices.
3. Translation of texts of oratory and rhetoric, which aims at translating texts of ancient rhetoric and oratory into Portuguese, with thematic essays or brief commentaries.

At the end of 2013, RHETOR had reached a level of quality in research that demanded a dialogue with other specialists from Brazil and abroad. At the same time, it was important to show the Group’s works to a broader audience. These were the main reasons for us to organise the RHETOR Conference. Since then the RHETOR Conference has been happening biannually, with discussions about ancient rhetoric and oratory and their reception by ancient and modern texts.
